This character named Barrick is somewhat of an arrogant
prince, which I thought would be a fun character to have a go at. I
know the picture is a bit dark. I fixed that for the final version which'll
be up shortly. As I read through Episode Three, I came across this passage
which led me to come up with the idea for the picture.

"Barrick
allows himself to be pulled toward his elder brother's chair
not the true throne, which has been covered with velvet cloth and not
used since Olin left, but the second-best chair which previously stood
at the head of the great dining table. They gently elbow their way past
a few courtiers anxious to snatch this moment with the prince regent.
Barrick's arm is throbbing. He wishes he was out on the hillside again,
riding by himself, far from these people. He hates them all, loathes
everyone in the castle . . . except, he must admit even to himself,
his sister and brother . . . and perhaps Chaven . . ."

I thought
it would be interesting to show the progression on this pic. A numbered
explination is below it...

It looks like pencil, but the whole thing was done in
Photoshop.
1)
a very faint sketch to get the proportions and pose down
2) outline was
drawn over the initial sketch
3) a bit unclear,
but the sketch was deleted
4) this was to
get the lighting down, and was used to help color later
5) finally somethin'
to sit on!
6) made a mask
for Barrick making it easier to color
7) initial coloring,
basically just getting the midtones down
8) highlights
and shadows are added
9) the chair
is colored, and the sketch of the chair is taken away
10) all that's missing is a background...(which'll be up soon! ;)
